John
Gould
| John
Gould was a contemporary of Audubon and was equally skilled as an
artist. He was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, and although he
had no formal university training, he became curator and taxidermist
at the Museum of the London Zoological Society in 1827. He and his
wife, Elizabeth, traveled extensively, documenting many of the world's
birds in 18 multi-volume books published from the 1830's through the
1880's. John and Elizabeth published over 3,000 lithographs in all.
Gilley's Gallery has original,
hand-colored lithographs from Gould's Hummingbirds and Birds of
Paradise, as well as reproductions of his Toucans from the British
Museum of Natural History. We also have the original ornithological
descriptions of most of the pieces in our collection; the description
will be given to the buyer.
