Edward S. Curtis

From the book
Edward S. Curtis
by Victor Boesen and
Florence Curtis Graybill
1977

Edward Sherriff Curtis was born in White Water, Wisconsin, in 1868. After the Curtis family moved to Minnesota, Edward had much exposure to the surrounding tribes such as the Chippewa and the Winnebago. Through his adolescence he taught himself the art of photography and even built his own cameras. Then, from 1896 until 1930, he photographed every major tribe west of the Mississippi River, using some 40,000 negatives to do so. His work is still valued as an important ethnography of our Native Americans.
