JOHN LAPSLEY
John Lapsley was born in Selma, Alabama, in 1915. At the age of twenty, he enrolled in the National Academy of Design in New York City. Four years later, Lapsley traveled to Mexico to meet Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros, having already influenced in murals by Jean Charlot. After his time of service in World War II, he worked for the Civil Service as an illustrator at Craig Air Force Base in Selma. He would stay in Selma until his retirement from a career with the Civil Service, interrupted by an MFA at Columbia and two years of instruction at Auburn University. Lapsley has held exhibitions all around the South, and he still resides at his home in Selma.
