JACQUES HNIZDOVSKY
Ukranian by birth, Jacques Hnizdovsky moved to the United
States in 1949. He studied oil painting in Warsaw and Zagreb,
but he changed to woodcuts after his move to the U.S. and
gained immediate attention.
Hnizdovsky is considered to
be one of America's greatest woodcut artists, and he produced
several hundred beautiful and intricate woodcuts during his
career.
He was, of course, influenced by the detail and color of Japanese woodcuts, but
his creations reflect his unquestionably unique style and sense of humor. He
was represented in New Orleans during the 1970's, and his work has been exhibited
in Japan, Russia, Italy and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. .
