HARVEY HARRIS
Harvey Harris
was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1915. His childhood
art lessons led him to the Hartford Art School. There, he
found admiration for the works of Benton, and, upon meeting
Benton at his home in Kansas City in the late 1930s, was
enrolled by the old artist in the Kansas City Institute
of Art. Like many artists of his time, Harris was drafted
into the Armed Forces during the 1940s. However, he was
discharged because of poor eyesight and soon married. He
and his bride moved to New Haven, where he received MFA
and DFA from Yale University. He would later move to Baton
Rouge in 1967 and was a Professor of Art at Louisiana State
University until his retirement in 1982.
