EMERSON BELL

1932 - 2006

Emerson Bell, an African-American artist, was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. As a professional artist, he was recognized for his African influenced wood sculpture, bronzes and paintings. Through his studies with sculpters John Payne and Frank Hayden, Emerson had also mastered the media of plaster, copper, metals, stone, and clay.

He was the first artist-in-residence at Baton Rouge Parish schools supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. His studies were in the field of Commercial Art (Metal and Design). He had said at one time that the artist Modigliana and Roualt inspired him in his work.


Emerson Bell passed away on April 13, 2006 at the age of 74.
