PIERRE AMBROGIANI
Pierre Ambrogiani was born in Corsica in 1906. Though he never attended art school, he was able to hold his first exhibition at the age of 30 in Marseilles. Later, he would hold exhibitions in Paris in 1946 and New York in 1947. Ambrogiani continued working on his engravings and developing his expressionistic style, concentrating on portraits and still lifes. But his most popular pieces were his landscapes, usually of the Mediterranean harbors and countryside. For these, he used bright reds and oranges, allowing the paint to dry in very thick brush strokes, sometimes standing close to an inch above the canvas. In 1973, he held a retrospective of his work in Marseilles and was soon after disabled by disease, ending his career as an artist. Pierre Ambrogiani died in 1985 at the age of 81.
