David Butler

Nativity , 1970

Housepaint on Tin
28 x 39 in

Presented here is a piece by the Louisiana Folk Artist, David Butler. This was one of his larger “shield” pieces located in the environment he constructed in his yard in Patterson, LA. This piece comes to Gilley’s Gallery from the collection of John Geldersma, the artist and friend of David Butler. I regard Mr. Geldersma’s collection of Butler work to be one of the best because he purchased the work directly from the artist through a friendship that they developed over several years. At one time, Mr. Geldersma’s collection included Mr. Butler’s own fancifully adorned bicycle, this “shield” piece as well as numerous tin cutouts. Mr. Geldersma considered this piece the most important of Butler’s work in his collection.
