Clementine Hunter

Pinwheels (Spider Lilies) , 1960's

Oil on Canvas
30 x 24 in

Zinnias were Clementine Hunter's favorite flower but on occasion she would paint many of the other flowers that surrounded her in the gardens of Melrose Plantation. In this painting we see a bouquet of Spider Lilies. Her version of the elongated petallike parts wrap around the center and appear to be moving, like a pinwheel. This painting was acquired from the Dr. & Mrs. Robert F. Ryan collection. Dr. Ryan was an important patron of the artist buying hundreds of paintings directly from the artist starting in the early 1960's. This painting was exhibited in the New Orleans Museum of Art's "A Centennial Salute to Clementine Hunter" in 1985 as well as The International Folk Art Festival, Sailor's Valentine Gallery, Nantucket, Mass. in 1987. It was titled "Spider Lilies" at that time. The painting is illustrated on page 154 of "Painting by Heart" by Shelby R. Gilley and is listed as "Pinwheels."
