Oil on Board

Here we see a group of finely dressed ladies and a young man ascending an uphill path, heading to church. Hunter often painted the St. Augustine Catholic Church (Isle Brevelle), located in Natchez, Louisiana. The church, which was founded in 1829 by freed slave Nicolas Augustin Metoyer, had a particular significance because it was the oldest church in the United States built by and for free people of color.
